Six More Weeks of Winter?

Phil the Groundhog supplies two fates for next month, including six more weeks of winter, or possibly an early spring.

Groundhog Day is celebrated in the United States and Canada on Feb. 2, and it is said to determine the fate of the weather.

  Some people really love winter.

¨I personally like winter because the snow looks good,” said junior Kaleb Baker. ̈ ̈Plus, my birthday is in winter, so I enjoy it.”

Others do not like to handle the cold and hope for a short, mild winter.

¨This year has been a mild winter,̈ claimed senior Nate Hirko. ¨I am happy about it because it is not very ́wintery ́. ̈

  And more…

¨I want winter to be over as soon as possible,̈ CHS math teacher Mr. Lantz stated. ¨I really want to start golfing sooner than later.¨

How does this phenomenon work? Since Groundhog Day is not as big of a holiday as others, some do not know how it works.

On Feb. 2, Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog emerges from his hole. If he sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter are on the way. If he does not see his shadow, an early spring is expected to come.

Many are skeptical of the accuracy of such an event, whether or not a groundhog can really determine.

¨I do not believe in Groundhog Day,̈ senior Alexis Letner said. ¨A groundhog can not predict the future.¨

Either way, Groundhog Day can be just a fun event as people get tired of the winter months. A few more weeks until the big day!
